Choosing a Firefighting School or Program

Before you choose a firefighting school or program ask yourself:
- Is the school or program reconized by the province in which you want to be hired in.
- Is the school or program Pro-Board or IFSAC accredited.
What criteria must be obtained prior to attending?
- Physical fitness test – which one?
- Level of education – chemistry, biology, grade 12 diploma?
- Language - High school transcripts
General questions to ask about the school.
- Is the school accredited or recognized?
- Does the province you want to work in recognize the school's fire programs?
- What qualifications will you receive upon completion of the fire programs?
- How many students where in each class?
- What is the ratio between students and instructors?
- How much practical training given?
- How much did they prepare you for the real world? (Get details of what they did)
- Is the school setting relaxed or very structured like the military?
- Is extra help available (like mentoring) if you need it?
- Is there a recreational facility available?
- Are courses part time or through correspondence?
- Does the school meet today's standards?
- Is the equipment in good condition and relevant regarding training props, apparatus, training techniques
Costs to consider:
- Tuition
- Books and supplies
- Admission fees
- Residence - Parking
- Meals – cafeteria, restaurants, personal fridge space etc.
- Room and board (if available)
- Transportation – taxi, bus, etc.
- How much did you spend in total while attending school?
